Acknowledge Your Successes in Life
Why is it that we neglect to acknowledge our successes in life?
We always seem to remember and give so much energy and emotion to our
failures, yet our accomplishments tend to go unnoticed. This goes back
to when we were very young. If you were playing nicely and quietly with
your siblings, your parents probably left you alone, yet as soon as a
fight broke out, you were in big trouble. The same thing went with your
report cards, an A got you a simple pat on the back, but a D meant you
were scared to go home. The stronger emotions were always attached to
the failures and misbehavings, the problem here is that we have brought
this into our adult life.
We tend to go from one accomplishment to the next without even recognizing our success, yet our failures haunt us as we repeat them over and over in our minds. You have to learn to give yourself a much needed pat on the back. Sit down and create a book of your accomplishments and achieved goals. This may require some time and serious thought, remember you have not been programmed to acknowledge yourself. You can keep adding to the log as you think of your wins, anything counts. It doesn't matter if it is a big or small win, it is still a win. This is a great tool for boosting your self esteem. Whenever you feel like you are a failure, you can go back and review the log and realize that you are actually incredibly successful.
When we move straight from one achieved goal to working on the next one, we send the message to our brains that we are lacking. Our focus is always on what we have to attain, instead of what we have accomplished. If you are like me, you get up each morning with big goals for the day. I make a list each morning of what I intend to accomplish that day. Until very recently I would revisit my list at the end of each day and focus on all the things that I didn't get done. Now, I simply move those items onto the next day and acknowledge myself for all of the items on the list that I did accomplish. What a difference this has made in the way I feel about myself. One might think that it would cause me to get less done in the day, as I have given myself an out. The contrary is actually true as it is very motivating for me to know that I will be celebrating my success at the end of the day.
We have all accomplished amazing things in our lives. Simply being born is an incredible miracle; you came from a sperm that won the race against billions of other sperm. Take the time to acknowledge your successes in life, create a book of your wins that you can refer to often. At the end of each day instead of focusing on what didn't get done, celebrate your accomplishments for the day. Give yourself that pat on the back, you know you deserve it.
