How Leaders DEVELOP
After more than four decades, dedicated to identifying, training,
developing and consulting to over a thousand actual, and/ or potential
leaders, as well as serving, personally, in various leadership
positions, I have come to strongly believe, it's important to realize,
there is no such thing, as a born - leader! Quality leaders are created,
and DEVELOP, from a wide variety, and combination of
skills, perceptions, insights, well - developed, relevant aptitude, and a
consistently, positive, can - do, attitude. With that in mind, this
article will briefly explore, consider, and discuss, using the mnemonic
approach, some of the necessities, of becoming a real leader.
1. Delve deeply; desire; deliver: Impulsiveness, and lack of being thoroughly prepared, and ready, to make decisions, is the enemy of effective leadership! True leaders must be ready, willing, and able, to delve deeply, into the obstacles, challenges, and options, and step forward, when lesser individuals, bury - their - head, in the sand! In order to deliver on what's needed and necessary, the individual must have a genuine desire to serve and represent others, in a relevant, sustainable manner!
2. Empathy; emphasis: A leader must be disciplined, enough, to listen effectively, rather than follow the urge to articulate his point of view! This focus, should lead to genuine empathy, and placing one's emphasis on the needs of others, and the group!
3. Vision; value; values: Leaders must share values, with the organization, and constituents, they serve and represent! They must possess a viable vision, which introduces, creates, and clearly articulates, the value, for others, to become more involved, and committed!
4. Energy; excellence: Many take the path, of least resistance, rather than demanding their utmost degree of personal excellence! If you hope to get others to follow, you must become, an example, to believe in! Will you do so, and proceed with an inspiring, motivating energy?
5. Listen; learn; leadership: Effective leadership only occurs, when one listens carefully, without prejudgment, and consistently learns, from every conversation, and experience. This only occurs, when one realizes, he does not possess all the answers, and one must consistently, acquire, additional relevant knowledge and understanding!
6. Options; opportunities; opinions: A leader must develop the ability to consider various options, and alternatives, with an open mind, and be prepared to recognize, the best opportunities, which might present themselves! We each possess opinions, but it takes the rare individual, to articulate his opinions, even when it means, having to expand, the limits of one's comfort zone!
7. Planning; priorities; process: Effective leadership training, leads to the ability, to proceed, with the best planning, and creation of a relevant, strategic and action plan! Actions must focus on priorities, and it's a true leader's responsibility and duty, to show others, how the process, will enhance the relevance and sustainability of the organization!
Why do you believe you, have what it takes, to become a quality leader? Will you commit, to what's needed, and necessary, to DEVELOP, and become, the best, you might be?
