Getting Unstuck is an Inside Job
All of us have been stuck at some point or another in our lives.
Getting stuck is part of the human condition. Staying there is not.
Perhaps you are in a dead or dying relationship, in the wrong job,
unable to move forward on a big project, feeling down and tired and
stressed and unable to move forward. Whatever your situation, you are
feeling like you are going nowhere. That is what it is to feel stuck.
How do you get out of those stuck places in life? It would be nice to
think that someone else could do it for us or that we could wave a magic
wand and have a whole new situation but that is not possible.
Our stuckness does not come from the circumstances of our lives. It comes from inside us, from how we see your situations, what we are telling ourselves about it and how we are reacting to it. We did not get stuck from outside conditions and we cannot get unstuck from outside conditions. We have to go inside to see what our stuckness is all about.
Here are a few things you can do to try to get at your stuck areas and get yourself moving again.

- Ask yourself some questions. What specifically are you stuck about? What is keeping you there? What are you afraid of? What would happen if you were unstuck? What would your life be like if your were unstuck? What would you be doing right now? What would others be doing right now? What do you need to do to to get your unstuck condition to happen? What is one thing you can do right now to make it happen?
- Use the Three Chairs Technique to get unstuck. Literally arrange three chairs in a circle. Label one chair "Me", the second chair "Other Person" and the third chair "Observer". Sit in the "Me" chair and write down the facts about what you are feeling stuck about and what you think you can do about it. Now move to the "Other Person" chair and write down what they think you are stuck about and what you can do about it. Finally, move to the "Observer" chair and write down what they think you are stuck about and what you can do about it. Compare the three lists. What trends can you see? What is different about each one? What do you have to change or do to get out of your stuck place? What are you willing to change or do to get out of your stuck place?
- Use the Movie Technique to get unstuck. Imagine that you are sitting in the movie theater. Move way back near the projection box so the screen is far away from you. Run your stuck situation through you mind like it is a full color movie. What did you notice about the main character - you? How would you advise "you" to get unstuck? Now run the movie again only let it be in black and white. What was different this time? What advice would you give to "you" now? What are some things you will do to get unstuck? Finally move closer to the screen. Run the movie again in color and add what you are going to do to reach the ending you want. What happened? What did you learn? What steps are you now going to take to get yourself unstuck?
